Really fun birding in the Fairfax/Centreville area yesterday
(10/11). I found many first of season birds. I had meant
to go to another park but the birds were right outside my
door so I explored the neighborhood from dawn to 9am. All
the common, later songbird migrants were present this
weekend in western Fairfax Co. and the birds were numerous.
Some of these birds were firsts for the season for me.
Migrants in my neighborhood:
Sharp-shinned Hawk, Y.b. Sapsucker, No. Flicker, E. Phoebe,
Brown Creeper, Winter Wren, both kinglets, Am. Robin, Gray
Catbird, Brown Thrasher, Yel.-rumped, BTGreen and Com.
Yellowthroat, and lots of sparrows (E. Towhee, Chipping,
Song, Swamp, White-throated and Junco).
Went to Elklick Woodlands in the latter half of the
morning. Heard a COMMON RAVEN off in the distance. Many
species that I had in my neighborhood were here also. Some
additional species - White-crowned (3 imm., 1 ad.) Sparrow
and Western Palm and Yellow Palm - both races were numerous.
