After I birded the park yesterday,
one of the rangers told me that he saw a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE
perched on the fence at the Bridle Trail parking lot on
Monday.
I birded the Bridle Trail and then led a Red-headed
Woodpecker walk. The most common birds were Turkey
Vulture (34, incl. a flock of 17 after 5pm possibly heading
to roost), Blue Jay (26, hard to count, this may be too
low), Red-bellied Woodpecker (25), Mourning Dove (23 incl. a
flock of 22) and No. Flicker (13).
Many songbird migrants were scarce - 5 individuals or less
of many species.
Red-headed Woodpeckers were active in the Walnut Grove,
looks weren't great but participants seemed satisfied of the
looks we did get as the 2 immatures and 3 adults flew out
and about. They seemed to be gathering food. I
found 2 more near the Contact Station later. 2
Red-headeds were near Gap Run on the E side of the park.
