Greg Moyers asked that I forward his local report of our trip today, which is
below. Common Mergansers were NOT expected! We didn't need the Gold Book to
know this was rare, but it was interesting to read there that 1954 was the last
Rockingham summer record; one of just a few in the Mtn & Valley region.
A link to a few pics I grabbed follows Greg's report. He digiscoped the birds,
and will also have photos.

Subject: [shenvalbirds] Switzer Dam - Common Mergansers/Warblers
Diane Lepkowski and I returned to Switzer Dam this morning. Most of the
warblers were again seen at the ever-dwindling stream on the right side of the
road on the way down the mtn. Species count was a bit reduced today but we had
several Black-Throated Green Warblers bathing in the water and also had
Northern Parula, Black-and-White, American Redstart, Ovenbird, a singing
Cerulean Warbler, Red-Eyed, and Blue-Headed Vireo, and a handsome Scarlet
Tanager at this spot.
On the way to the mountain, Diane had requested a birthday surprise bird. As I
scanned the lake, that wish was granted in the form of four juvenile Common
Mergansers out on the lake. Definitely a surprise in mid-summer! (or first
day of birding Fall if you prefer)
Hooded Warblers and Acadian Flycatchers were found at several stops. Other
highlights were Broad-Winged Hawk and Wood Thrush.
The Sora was heard at Nazarene Church Rd wetland. We also counted at least 21
Wood Ducks.
