Lot's of waterfowl today at Occoquan NWR. Several large rafts were initially found in the bay off the gazebo. Mostly gadwall, there were also many coot plus ring-necked duck, redhead, 2 canvasback, American wigeon, bufflehead, ruddy ducks and lesser scaup. Off Deephole Pt. was a flock of 19 horned grebes, in all plumages from winter to breeding. Several pied-billed grebese were also noted. Along Deephole Pt. Rd. many ducks were in the waters of Belmont Bay, including greater scaup, red-breasted merganser, common goldeneye, and tundra swan. Off Taylor Pt. I was amazed by a flock of about 40 Bonaparte's gulls that had just lifted off from the water. They soared in circles for a while, then came back down to the river. There were also tons of ducks along the shore all the way back towards Mason Neck State Park, but too far away to id. Other notables were king rail, 5 rusty blackbirds, a brown thrasher, and 4 fox sparrows. The complete list is below.
