The Northern Virginia Bird Club visit to Occoquan Bay NWR this morning was
attended by 18 folks, and a total of 66 species were seen. Waterfowl
diversity is still low, but the compensations were many. Several saw a king
rail fly about 30 feet over the marsh at Easy Rd., and we all heard it call
right next to the road. We got great looks at a flying snipe, saw a pine
warbler along Deephole Pt. Rd., 2 Bonaparte's gulls, 4 horned grebes, a male
harrier, and 5 rusty blackbirds. A flyover pipit before the walk started
was heard by a few early arrivers. The complete list is below.
