Anyone who lives in the area or has birded this park may want to help in the
effort to repair damage from Hanna. Lake Accotink Park is located in
Springfield, Virginia, and can be accessed from Highland or Heming Avenues (ADC
Northern Virginia map book, page 22).

Subject: volunteer assistance needed at Lake Accotink Park!
Lake Accotink Park sustained severe damage from the rampaging water from
tropical storm Hanna. Below is a list of what was damaged along with some
before and after photos.
We are asking all civic and community leaders to sound the alert to all
potential volunteers. We would gratefully accept anyone's help in removing man
made and natural debris from the lake. We can supply gloves, bags, nets, boats,
etc. This would be a good scout, teen or church group project.
Anyone interested in assisting the park in the clean up can contact the park
office at 703-569-0285 (ext 0) and we can coordinate what you need.
Basically anytime of the day or early evening would be fine. The goal is to
remove the debris from the lake as fast as we can. We are also working on
repairing significant damage to the parking lot, dam and other areas. It will
be very expensive as you can imagine. 50% of the trestle parking lot was
destroyed and the dam flash boards were knocked out or bent. The lake water
level is low. We need to get the dam repaired and the water level back up.
We could use some assistance assessing water levels through out the lake as
well. We need to figure out if we have new sand bars in the lake now. We would
like to be able to open up and finish the fall season strong. This is a good
opportunity to get out in a canoe or row boat for someone who is comfortable on
the water. We may be able to get to this tomorrow. We can give you life jackets
and a radio for communication.
Thank you in advance for your support. Please forward to any of your contacts
with churches, schools, clubs, scouts, civic groups, etc.
Kudos to our team at the park for making themselves available all day
yesterday, last night and all day today.
