Greetings Virginia Birders,
Thirteen birders enjoyed a spectacular spring morning at New Quarter Park near
Williamsburg this morning. Jim Corliss, Williamsburg Bird Club member and
Certified VA Master Naturalist (Historic Rivers Chapter) led the group around
our usual trek -- down to Queen's Creek and then a wooded trail to the point at
the fire pit.
The group observed 45 species and Jim helped us identify quite a few birds
singing up in the canopy. Amazingly, we got good looks at a perching male
Ruby-throated Hummingbird in a spotting scope as well as six Cedar Waxwings.
Some others were not so cooperative. Three Spotted Sandpipers were feeding on
the wide mud flats on Queen's Creek.

A couple hundred people were around the park entrance and parking lot
organizing and participating in a 5K run. We're sure that's the reason the Bald
Eagles did not put in an appearance today along with a few other "regulars" we
usually find, like Brown Thrashers, Red-headed Woodpeckers, and Northern
Flickers!
The Williamsburg Bird Club and New Quarter Park sponsor a bird walk each 2nd
and 4th Saturday of the month. Next walk is May 26, 7 am. Visitors welcome! If

Here is today's list. A few common birds eluded us, but we'll blame it on
the runners:)
