In Richmond VA
Sue Ridd and Adolph White, along with many other onlookers, observed over 3,200
Purple Martins gracing the skies above 17th Street Bradford pear trees before
they close their gliding wings and dove at break-neck speed toward the trees to
avoid the
peregrine falcons who watched from their lofty vantage point of Monroe Building
preparing to make their 200 mile per hour dive at the descending martins.
To observe this display of grace and speed, follow these directions to Richmond
VA:
*Drive east on east main street to Shockoe Bottom. Turn left on north 17th
Street.
*Cross east Franklin St. and see the birds' roost trees on your left.
*Wait on the sidewalk across the street from the trees, or wait in the parking
lot west of the trees.
*The birds arrive roughly between 8 and 8:45. They can be unpredictable, so it
good to be there by 7:45
