The Williamsburg Bird Club visited Craney Island Saturday, August 16.
Our leader was ornithologist Dr. Dan Cristol from W&M. We had 18
adults and 3 middle schoolers. Dr. Mitchell Byrd was with our group as
well.
We tallied 51 species between 8:15 and noon. We did NOT see the Terek
Sandpiper reported the previous week. However, keep in mind that there
are thousands of shore birds at Craney now and most are barely visible
with a scope. They are continually shifting around depending on the
water levels in the center and north cells.

Red-necked Phalaropes (5)
Black Tern (1)
White-rumped Sandpiper (2)
Lesser Black-backed Gull
Yellow-crowned Night Heron -- juvenile
Black-bellied Plover

Craney Island is open to the public on week days from 7 am - 3 pm
(Monday - Thursday) and 7 am - 2 pm on Fridays.
