Dea VA Birders,
Russ Taylor and I did our first survey of the season for the Virginia Working
Landscapes project, sponsored by the Smithsonian, studying warm season vs. cool
season grasses, and the effect on bird, plant and insect diversity. Our first
stop was “the old horse pasture” at the MARE center in Fauquier County, just
south of Middleburg, VA. This field was chock-a-block with Grasshopper
Sparrows, Common Yellowthroat, Field Sparrow, Eastern Meadowlarks and Indigo
Buntings. We also saw Blue Grosbeaks, Eastern Bluebirds, Chipping Sparrows and
an Orchard Oriole.
We next surveyed a field at Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, in Loudoun County,
and found Prairie Warblers, Yellow-breasted Chat, Field Sparrows, Indigo
Buntings, Blue Grosbeak, and in the woods nearby, Red-headed Woodpecker,
Eastern Wood Peewee, and Wood Thrush.
On the way home we made a pit stop at Beaverdam Creek Reservoir, and found a
Common Loon. It as flagged by eBird, as being late for the Piedmont, so I added
a photo to the eBird list, below.
Cheers,
Phil
