Hello Birders,
This past Sunday Richmond Audubon led a trip to Curles Neck Farm in Eastern
Henrico County. Curles Neck remains "the" spot for Snow Geese away from the
coast in Virginia. Highlights of the trip included a pair of Ross's Geese
and at least two Richardson's Cackling Geese mixed in with the thousands of
Snow and Canada Geese. Waterfowl was the theme of the day...in addition to
the four goose species, we tallied 13 species of ducks.
And the teaser of the day was a far too quick look at what I'm 90% sure was
an immature male Yellow-headed Blackbird. Hard bird to get wrong, I know,
but I had what amounted to about 5 total seconds of viewing of the bird
while it was in distant flight with a mixed blackbird flock. No one else in
the group managed a look and despite the efforts of many we could not
refind it. I'm not satisfied enough to set it in stone, ebird stone.

Curles Neck is private and Richmond Audubon has managed permission to lead
a trip here from time to time, usually in the fall. Thanks for John and

Snow Goose (Chen caerulescens) 1500 80% "Blue" Geese.
Ross's Goose (Chen rossii) 2 2 birds in a mixed flocks of Snow and
Canada Geese. Noticeably smaller than the Snow Geese and showing clearly
the very, small and short bill. Seen well by many in the group.
Cackling Goose (Richardson's) (Branta hutchinsii hutchinsii) 2 Birds
feeding together among Canada Geese. Shorter and Smaller overall with
short bills. Birds also more pale grayish overall when compared to the
Canadas.
