It was a fine morning weather wise for the first Sunday morning walk at Dyke
Marsh, Alexandria. Temps in the low 70's, some mid morning cloud cover and a
slight breeze made walking comfortable for our large group. Happy to have help
leading from Larry Cartwright, Phil Silas and Ray Smith as it's easy for a
large group to fragment, moving at different paces and focusing on different
aspects of marsh life.
We managed to pick up 47 species, not a bad tally for the first weekend in
August. Lots of Foresters Terns about along w. a few Caspians. Gulls included
Laughing, Ringbilled and Great Black Backs. Great Egret numbers are pushing 80
(77 counted today) as they stage for their southbound push. One of each Oriole
species was found w. a male Baltimore highlighting our inbound trip. The temp
and humidity had gone up by the time we reached the last platform on the Haul
Road, but the remaining walkers were rewarded w. quick looks at two Least
Bitterns (M&F) flying around the island across the channel from the platform.
Ray Smith reported seeing a Snowy Egret and Greater Yellowlegs off the Stone
Bridge before the walk started.
