It was a very nice morning for the www.FODM.org bird walk at Dyke Marsh, just
off the GW Pkwy, south of Old Town Alexandria. We started w. 16 people
assembling in the picnic area and our numbers grew to over 20 as the walk
progressed, but who's counting? Obviously, not me.
Between us, we managed to see 50 species. Unfortunately, the last one was added
just after I picked up Diana from the kayak launch area and headed out to the
parkway. The only NO. PARULA of the day sang. Unfortunately because it was on
the wish list of our two visitors from the west coast and I thought for sure we
would hear one during the walk.
Ospreys are feeding chicks, one of the young on the marina nest has fledged,
both of the fledged BALD EAGLES on the power tower nest were perched up there
this morning, a few GREAT EGRETS were about, ORCHARD ORIOLES were seen, but no
Baltimores. One lone RE VIREO was finally heard on our way back in. SONG
SPARROWS and WARBLING VIREOS were singing and continuing to frustrate our
Breeding Bird survey coordinator, Larry Cartwright due to the fact that no
nests have been located. Keep the faith Larry.
Some of the effects of the microburst that hit our area the night of June 18
are evident along Haul Road - very large trees down, branches gone and I'm sure
bird numbers were impacted. Will be curious to see if our woodpecker population
increases over the next few years...eBird list for today follows... Rich
