I birded NY Monuments at Manassas Battlefield NP, Prince William Co, VA, this
morning. I arrived at 6:30 and the birds were popping up everywhere for a solid
hour. 7 Warbler species total. The most Black and White Warblers I have ever
seen at once with at least 5 or 6 different birds. However, at 7:30 the switch
was flipped off and the birds were gone! Great fun while it lasted.
I then ventured over to Conway Robinson State Forest. I had 7 woodpeckers,
including many Red-headed Woodpeckers. One RHWO was carrying food. I walked the
perimeter of the pine stand. There were lots of Pine Warblers, and the
highlight was a Blue-winged Warbler. He was flying back and forth across the
hiking trail, making me think nestlings, but I did not find any evidence of
such.
There were 2 Ovenbird (10 warblers on the day), Swainson’s Thrush, and a Wood
Thrush. I observed a Cedar Waxwing tearing apart a tent caterpillar nest. I
guess it was trying to get at the worms, but I had never seen this behavior
before.
