Dave Boltz and I ventured forth this morning to Occoquan Bay NWR. We
had to deal w. some unfortunate traffic events but still managed to
arrive shortly after the gates opened. We were treated to a great
sunrise as the rain clouds passed to the east and the sun warmed
things up in a hurry. No wind made for good sparrow action around the
parking lot, although the diversity seemed to be down from weekend
reports. WINTER WRENS again came through, some singing and providing
good looks. We came upon a nice flock of CEDAR WAXWINGS near the
parking lot, 2 HERMIT THRUSSHHEESS on the road to Deephole Point and
one NO. CATBIRD near the marsh, one KING RAIL sounded off for us.
Waterfowl diversity was down and try as he might, Dave, with camera
at the ready, could not relocate the Palm Warbler he tallied this
weekend.
Nothing spectacular, but a very nice morning to be out...
