The Northern Virginia Bird Club visited Occoquan Bay NWR in Woodbridge this
morning. The 23 participants enjoyed a long hike and a decent list of 65
species. Rather quiet for long stretches, but we enjoyed a multitude of
butterflies and other wildlife at the refuge besides the birds. Highlights
were a red-breasted nuthatch along Easy Road, a warbler flock near the banding
station that contained bay-breasted, parula, black-and-white, pine, magnolia,
and blackpoll warblers plus yellow-billed cuckoo, scarlet tanager, and brown
thrasher, a flock of 12 turkeys walking single file near the blind, blue
grosbeak and indigo bunting in the grassy area behind the pond, a fly-over
red-headed woodpecker, a black-and-white warbler and parula mobbing a black
snake crawling up a sapling, and 2 palm warblers next to the parking lot.
