A visit to Bear Creek Lake produced a GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH. According to Birds
of Virginia's South-Central Piedmont (ed. Dalmas et al), there is only one
report of the species in the region, from Buckingham County in September 2006.
This is a measure of this being an underbirded area, a situation I am trying to
remedy.
Also of note was a DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT. Dalmas indicates a LOS date of
May 21 for the region.
On the way home, I stopped by Powhatan Lakes. The lake has been restored
following a dam failure in 2004. The upper lake is full and the lower lake is
close to being so. This looks like a promising area for wintering waterfowl.
