Rich Rieger spent a bit over 3 hours on the back side of Huntley Meadows
this morning. There was good warbler diversity with 8 species being seen,
with Nashville and Hooded probably being the top ones. I was about 98%
certain I also had a Canada but never got a look at the neck area underneath
and Rich did not see the bird. The Hooded was seen at the first meadow
around the dead pines and across the road in the bushes. Most of the rest
were seen in the "Woodcock field" (first one on the right, after Pond Trail
Loop). Much of the activity there was near a cherry tree not far after
entering the field. One highlight there was a pair of young juvenile YB
Cuckoos that had Rich and I scratching our heads, because they lacked any
tail spotting whatsoever but had some white in the tail, had rufous wing
patches, but somewhat slaty bills with just a hint of yellow beginning to
show. After looking at several field guides and many pictures on the
internet, I finally found a dead ringer in the inset picture on p. 252 of
Ned Brinkley's National Wildlife Federation Field Guide.
We also hear a gobbling Turkey and wondered if he had his seasons reversed.
Lots of RT Hummers, 1 White-eyed and 3 Red-eyed Vireos, 2 Blue Grosbeaks,
and 1 Indigo Bunting round out the notables.
The complete list is below.
