I hit a nice wave of migrants along Cockpit Pt. Rd. in Dumfries this morning.
In the trees along the road a steady movement of birds lasted for about half an
hour. I was able to identify Tennessee (6), northern parula (5),
chestnut-sided (4), magnolia (4), black-throated blue (3), yellow-rumped (1),
black-throated green (2), blackburnian (2), black-and-white (2), American
redstart (3), and northern waterthrush (1) for warbers, lots of red-eyed
vireos, rose-breasted grosbeak (4), scarlet tanager (1), Traill's flycatcher,
Swainson's thrush (2), wood thrush (4), and yellow-billed cuckoo. Many more
birds passed by without being identified. A large flock of robins was feeding
on grapes and other fruit, and a barred owl called from the woods. At the ash
pond there was a very nice mix of ducks, probably the most diverse I have seen
there. They included about 200 Canada geese, 40 mallards, 25 pintail, 12
shoveler, 8 green-winged teal, 2 Amercian wigeon, and 1 black duck.
