First thing I heard when I stepped out of the car on Golf Course Road early
this morning was an EASTERN SCREECH-OWL. Good way to start a 50-species
morning here at Natural Bridge.
I listened for thrushes flying over at around dawn, and had a good flight of
SWAINSON'S THRUSHES. Right at sunrise I heard the flight call of a GRAY-CHEEKED
THRUSH coming from the bushes. Sure enough, one came out to a recording. This
is our 138th species for the property.
Over the course of the morning, I ran into a few good groups of warblers. The
biggest flock gave me NASHVILLE, CAPE MAY, BAY-BREASTED, CHESTNUT-SIDED, PALM,
and PINE WARBLERS. There were also good numbers of BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER
and AMERICAN REDSTART, and one of each BLUE-WINGED and CANADA WARBLERS. There
was a total of 16 warbler species here this morning. Not bad!
