The sighting of 3 Great Blue Heron yesterday in Highland County raised
several questions in my mind. The birds were located on Strait Creek
Farm, north on 220 from Monterey. (This farm is just north of the fish
hatchery). I saw 2 juveniles (strikingly white, yet adult-sized) and 1
adult perched precariously at the top of a deciduous tree, the tree top
appearing to be too small for their bulk! They kept attempting to find
a stronger branch to perch on. I know that there is one breeding record
from 1989, but wondered if there are additional rookeries sited in
Highland? Does anyone know if the young remain with the mother for the
first summer, thus traveling distances from the nest, or would the
appearance of the 3 birds together indicate the presence of a local nest?

This albatross tracking site is really pretty neat. It took me a while to
figure out where the progress maps were, so I thought others might want to
have a quick short-cut to be able to see the progress without the hassle of
finding the maps:

What a great idea.
