A belated post for yesterday, Saturday, April 18
Great Dismal Swamp
It was an early department to reach Jericho Ditch at Great Dismal Swamp by
8 a.m. for a bit of R&R. (Anything but landscaping!!!!) Although sun was
shining it was a bit cool, probably explaining why it was pretty quiet for
next 30 minutes.
As morning heated up, activity increase.
Highlights included (image links to few below)
SWAINSON'S WARBLER - at least 5 heard and one photographed
PROTHONOTARY WARBLER - plentiful, including three adult males sparing over
one female
OVENBIRD - only one heard, early afternoon as I was leaving
AMERICAN REDSTART - 1
NORTHERN PARULA - 1
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER - 1
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT - unlimited
PRAIRIE WARBLER
BLUE GRAY GNATCATCHER - many, several observed collecting nesting materials
LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH - at least 6 heard, one observed
WOOD THRUSH - 1 singing
GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER - 4
BARRED OWL - 1 hooting
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET - 1
SWAMP SPARROW - 1 singing in the sun
RED-EYED VIREO - 1 singing
YELLOW-THROATED VIREO - at least 3 singing males
WHITE-EYED VIREO - 2 singing
