Following is the count from Sunday's weekly bird walk at Great Falls
National Park, which identified 34 species and included 15 participants.
Despite the windy conditions, cedar waxwings and bluebirds were in abundance,
and two respectable murders of fish crows were observed. One of the most
unusual sightings, however, did not take place until the end of the walk: a
merlin, probable female, was basking in the sun at the top of a tree (subject
of a separate, and more detailed, va-bird posting).
The walk meets at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings, rain or shine, in front of the
snack bar/concession stand of the Great Falls Park visitors' center; it does
not take place, though, during electrical storms, heavy snows, or when the
trails are icy. All birders are welcome!
