On this breezy Mother's Day our group of eight tallied 64 species. The
highlight on the Potomac River was a hooded merganser. Both adult eagles were
on the nest this morning. Near the Matildaville ruins we had a veery, wood
and swainson's thrushes. There was a good showing of warblers from the dam to
the lock beyond the holding basin. Blackpolls seemed to be everywhere. We met
up with a skilled birder who had taken the river trail where he saw an
ovenbird, worm-eating and black and white warblers and later a bay-breasted at
the maintenance shed (These birds are in addition to our list.). Orioles have
returned in full force. It was a very good morning the park. Our group checks
the parking lot (black-throated blue, scarlet tanager & Red-tailed hawks this
morning) and then convenes in the visitors center courtyard. All are welcome
