VA BIRDers,
Highlight for the Great Falls, VA suburban subsector of the Seneca CBC was
an overflying Pine Siskin early in the morning near Rt 198 and Springvale
Rd. There were no other unusual birds found.
This subsector consists of bottom land and upland forest, mainly deciduous,
along the Potomac River above the fall line (piedmont) and one wetland (ca
60 acres) dominated by forbs, shrubs, and a few small trees. Also, suburban
backyards, a few weedy empty lots, some small horse lots, and a few power
line cuts. It's a bit of a challenge to bird the area, esp. for waterfowl
(this year Gadwall were found!). This year the species count was 51,
improved by 1 over last year. The list for 6.25 hrs of daylight counting is
below.
