Yesterday, I drove up a National Forest road to a place called Ellerber
Sods which is in West Virginia, but very close to Bear Mt, which is
where I live in Virginia. The road is about 4-5 miles long, mostly in
forest, but when you arrive at the top, you are in a totally bald,
grassy knob with an incredible view in all directions. On the way in, I
spotted a huge bird, looked very black with white accents. It flew
around for quite awhile, landed on the ground, then took off. Another
bird also took off with it. It was surprisingly black, but definitely a
golden eagle. Perhaps it was the light, or maybe the contrast against
the snow. It was the first time I had seen eagles in the woods here in
Highland County. In the past, I've seen them in fields, or eating
carrion, but this view was very special.
