I got to the New York Monuments about 6:45 this morning. I had to park by
the gate as it wasn't open yet. Walking in I heard a Screech owl call 5-6
times. A Raven was being chased by 3 crows as well. There was already good bird
activity at sunup. Highlites-besides these two- were a Red-headed woodpecker
adult(until the agressive Hummingbird chased it off), Summer Tanager with still
good color(lots of Scarlet Tanagers as well), great looks at a Mourning Warbler
in the scrub trees by the pine below the parking, Philadelphia Vireo,
Yellow-throated Vireo(lots of red-eyed vireos), Least Flycatcher(singing), and
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher. Also seen: Warblers(Hi Laura): Magnolia, Hooded, Bay
Breasted, Pine, Common Yellowthroat, Black and White, Blackburnian, Cape May,
Canada, Chestnut-sided. Also there: Baltimore Oriole. Cedar Waxwings, White
eyed
Vireo(several), Eastern Wood Pewee, Great Blue Heron, Field Sparrows, Robins,
BG
Gnatcatchers, etc. You all have done a great job of tramping the chigger
holding vegetation down in the last week-WAY TO GO! Dave White Zion Crossroads
