My wife and I took advantage of the warming weather today and decided to head
to Great Dismal Swamp in Suffolk this afternoon. We drove in along Jericho
Ditch and were stopped part way along the road by a flock of white-throated
sparrows moving along the edge. While stopped we started seeing some blackbirds
moving through the trees. They never stopped for long but we were able to get
good enough views to identify them as rusty blackbirds. A lifer for us and
quite cool.
Once we got to the parking lot and started along the trails we were pleasantly
surprised to see and hear a large number of catbirds. Later on we came across a
mixed flock of robins and cedar waxwings. They were very busy eating mistletoe
berries. Beautiful in the afternoon light.
There was a lot movement in the undergrowth that was out of view and let
unidentified. And a steady drumming of woodpeckers, but again few that we could
positively identify.
