VA BIRDers,
Three of us, Kelly Fitzpatrick, Tom Ewert and myself, did the waterfowl count
along the Potomac River in the vicinity of Hallowing Pt and the Great Marsh and
then Belmont Bay to Kanes Cr. Our highlight bird was a Greater White-fronted
Goose (Greenland race) hanging out with about 260 Canada Geese in Gunston Cove.
It was a rather strange day from a duck perspective. We did not encounter the
type of diversity normally expected. Our totals were:
Double-crested Cormorant 1
Greater White-fronted Goose 1
Canada Goose 524
Tundra Swan 76
Gadwall 8
Am. Black Duck 221
Mallard 149
Green-winged Teal 12
Canvasback 50
Ring-necked Duck 13
Greater Scaup 10
Lesser Scaup 1478
scaup sp. 3600
Bufflehead 73
Hooded Merganser 2
Common Merganser 3
Greater Yellowlegs 1
Forster's Tern 1
Where did the Ruddy Ducks go?
I have heard that another large raft of scaup is off Leesylvania SP.
