Mostly overcast with a little weak sun, light NW wind 3-8 mph, in the mid
80s.

Raptor Observations:
Despite the clouds the warmth put the birds very high up again, but at
least easier to detect. Best numbers the first hour, with activity
gradually slowing over the short time I could be up.

Site Description:
Candler Mountain is located on the southeast edge of Lynchburg, VA, in
Virginia's Inner Piedmont. It is 45 miles SSE of Rockfish Gap and 32 miles
E of Harvey's Knob. The primary site is a bare knob just above and behind
the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Center.  The ridge is part of a minor ridge
that parallels the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is 21 miles to the NW. The
bare knob offers a 360 degree view from an elevation of 1336 feet. The
Candler Mountain hawk count is in its fourteenth year, and is sponsored by
the Liberty University Department of Biology and the Lynchburg Bird Club.
The count is currently conducted only from early September to the end of
the month due to a shortage of counters.

Directions to site:

From 501 S through Lynchburg take the Candler's Mountain Road/Liberty

University exit. After two traffic lights take the ramp to the right,
staying on Candler's Mountain Road rather than merging onto Route 460. At
the second traffic light continue straight, ascending the mountain. At 0.2
miles beyond the Wingate Inn take a left into the Liberty Mountain Snowflex
Center. Park in front of the lodge. The hawk count, conducted on the
summit of the ridge just behind the Snowflex ski slope, is reached by
walking up the private access road on the east side of the lodge, around
the base of the ridge and up the back side of the ridge to its top. Check
in at the lodge before using the access road to walk up.
