Total observation time: 9.5 hours
Official Counter: Carl Christensen
Observers: Barry Kinzie, David Kirk, Mike Crowder
Visitors:
Janet S., who spent most of the day, was a great help. Lots of Parkway
visitors--many with questions. More than the usual number of bicyclists.
One in particular left Brooklyn, NY and was on his way to New Orleans. As
always, several hikers crossed over the road today.
Weather:
Winds light with gusts of 2. The day started at 100% cloudy, clearing to 5%
through the afternoon. Visibility was very good throughout the day.
Temperatures ranged from 12-22C.
Raptor Observations:
Broad wings were high again throughout the day and on the east side as all
sightings were. Our major sightings of broad wings were between the
10-11:00 period (72), and again between 3-4:00 (76). Our first ABE was at
1:30 and our second ABE at 3:30.
Non-raptor Observations:
9 monarchs were observed and fewer dragonflies for the day. Our gnats were
back with a vengeance today. Not naming names, the gnat slayers (Mike and
David) had a contest with the zapper on who could get the most gnats with
one swipe. It was too close, so I will call it even at 7 each. Predict
fewer gnats tomorrow.
Predictions:
About the same as today with more cloud cover.
