Visitors:
We had a few family stop by the platform today. We also had Harry
Armisted, Bob and Thuy Anderson on hand to help with the hawk watch. Of
course after Kiptopekeâs banding station closed for the day Calvin
Brennan, Chris and Betsy Foster were around to assist with the count as
well.
Weather:
We had a wonderful day, expect for the bright blue skies. A steady wind
from the West North West in the morning and moving to West for the rest of
the day.
Raptor Observations:
We had a taste of fall migration today. Number picked up across the board,
but we are still waiting on the Accipiters to start moving. Osprey had a
steady southerly push all day, with a total of 79 for the day. American
Kestrels started to move in the afternoon with 26 for the day. We also had
our first Merlins of the year with a total of 4 today.
Non-raptor Observations:
Passerines are one the move. In the morning there were 76 Eastern Kingbird
flying all around the platform. There was also a nice flock of Bobolinks.
There was a Yellow Warbler, a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and a Blue Grosbeak
foraging around the platform all day. A Pine Warbler was heard singing
throughout the day as well. Purple Martins gave an amazing show by
streaming over the park for most of the day mixed with other swallows
including some Bank and Cliff Swallows.
