Total observation time: 10 hours
Official Counter: John Irvine, Jr.
Observers: Donna Lewis, Ed Lewis, John Irvine, Tom Pendleton
Visitors:
Former coordinator John Irvine, Jr. was on board early this morning joined
by Tom Pendleton. Glad they were rewarded with a few birds. Ed Lewis
took over for the afternoon but birds were difficult at best to spot.
Thanks to Nancy Corwin and Donna Lewis for their "eagle" eyes.
Robert Plank
Visitors: Alice Davis, Marylyn Gillespie
Weather:
Beautiful morning with cooler temps and bright blue skies. Unfortunately,
not a single cloud to help find high sailing anything. Wind continues to
change on the toss of a dime, it seems. Early morning SW 6-11 km/h and 30
minutes later it was out of the NNW clocking at breezy 20-28 km/h. By 11
a.m. EST, wind shifted to SE then continued to shift between variable, SE
and ESE.
Temp: 46% > 64% then dropping back to 41%;
Bar Pressure: 1021 dropping to 1020 with wind shift out of SE by 2 pm.
EST;
Cloud Cover: not a wisp;
Visibility: 18 km with return of haze
Raptor Observations:
A small push during morning with birds already flying high, beyond limit of
unaided eye but visible with binoculars. Very difficult at best and by
early afternoon things pretty much came to a screeching halt. More than
likely the birds were still flying over but way too high to locate in the
bright blue sky.
BW hourly flight today (EST): 8-9:1; 9-10:30; 10-11:34: 11-12:1; 12-1:1:
1-2:0; 2-3:6; 3-4:0; 4-5:8
Season's first Merlin at 3:56 EST.
Northern Harrier: female
Non-raptor Observations:
Wild Turkey (of the feather kind) - 3; although we occasionally see them
further east along I-64, they are an uncommon sight from the hawk watch.
Ruby-throated Hummingbird - 2
Red-headed Woodpecker - 1 adult;
Common Nighthawk - 2@5:15
Predictions:
Clouds are NOT overrated!
