A morning birding trip to Staunton River Battlefield State Park in
Halifax/Charlotte counties yielded the following species: Great Blue
Heron, Wood Duck, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Ruby-throated Hummingbird,
Belted Kingfisher, Eastern Wood-pewee, Eastern Phoebe, Eastern Kingbird,
Blue Jay, Carolina Chickadee, Carolina Wren, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher,
Eastern Bluebird, Red-eyed Vireo, Yellow Warbler, Black and White
Warbler, Blue Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting and American Goldfinch.
Butterflies included Hackberry Emperor, Tawny Emperor, Monarch,
Spicebush Swallowtail, Red-spotted Purple and Red Admiral. A quick stop
to Staunton View Park picked up Double-crested Cormorant, Great Egret,
Killdeer, Spotted Sandpiper, Semi-palmated Sandpiper and Common Tern. A
pair of Barn Owls were found in an old structure during the day. Good
birding.
