Va-Birders,
Today I finally got the view I've been hoping for of this beautiful bird.
I did see the bird briefly about two weeks ago, and had a couple of "maybes"
before that, but I wasn't satisfied with any of those sightings and have kept
going back.
I arrived at 11 am; left about 12:30 and drove over to Leesylvania State Park.
After leaving Leesylvania, I stopped again at Julie Metz to try one more time.
I'm very glad I did because I hit the jackpot.
I had not one, but TWO separate views. I was standing at the end of the path
that parallels the road just where the path turns down a short slope to the
Memorial. The Harris' flew into a small tree on my right and just sat there.
Incredibly, it gave me both side views, and then it turned around and I got a
front view.
It flew across the path, went down into the grass, but then almost immediately
popped up again into another small tree. I had another great side view here
and then it flew off and I could not find it again. All of my views were in
full sunshine. The time was about 2:30 p.m.
I did not see the Clay-colored Sparrow.
