Total observation time: 7 hours
Official Counter: Mitch Mitchell
Observers: Darryl Martin, David Kirk, King Irvin, Mike Crowder
Visitors:
Had plenty of help today from Bill James, Bob Epperson, Phillip Ferguson,
Barry Kinzie and Alan Austin who showed up in his nearly invisible
camouflaged van.
Weather:
Another hot day, started at 23c and climbed to 29c. Little wind at the
start of the watch through around 1:30 when it picked up on the eastern
side to about 5 mph. Hazy in the western valley throughout the day and
cloud cover varied from 30 to 75%.
Raptor Observations:
First bird of the day was a broadwing in the 11 o'clock hour and little
activity until the wind picked up on the east side in the 2 o'clock hour.
All but one sharp shined and one osprey were observed on the east side or
directly overhead. A total of four bald eagles today with three in quick
succesion beginning about 2:50. The fourth came shortly after just past
the 3:00 hour. Also in the 2:00 hour we had 6 of the 11 osprey seen during
the day.
Non-raptor Observations:
5 monarchs were seen in the early portion of the watch. Plenty of parkway
traffic with a heavy dose of motorcylcles. One AT hiker was dropped off at
the overlook and headed south.
Predictions:
May be slightly cooler and even more so through the first several days of
next week.
