Official Counter: David Brunstetter
Observers: Allen & Robin Austin, Baron Gibson, Darryl Martin,
Mitch Mitchell
Visitors:
Had lots of great help today. Mitch and Darryl stayed till the end. Baron
lent his usual level of expertise. Robin and Allen, Barry, Don, Gretch, Sue
and Tim, Phillip, Dillard, Cornelius and his wife from the Netherlands,
John and his wife, Ranger Cat Lipp, Dan and his family, Mike and his wife,
and of course, Bill and Katie were all excellent. I know I missed others,
but your help was much appreciated. There were also several visitors that
stopped to chat today. A hiker from Germany appreciated a cold soda
provided by Allen and Robin.
Weather:
The day started at 61F and warmed to 72F. It got fairly hot when the sun
was shining, but quite comfortable when cloud cover rolled in. Clouds were
5-10% in the morning and increased to as much as 95% in the afternoon.
Winds were 1-2. Started out to the NW, then became variable form NE to N.
Visibility was a 5 throughout, though the Western Valley started with a fog
layer that quickly burned off.
Raptor Observations:
Not surprisingly, the hawks were seen initially on the Western side, but
switched over the knob and to the East when the wind changed. The birds
started very low, but afternoon birds were way up there. Immature bald
eagles were seen at 10:06a, 11:05a, and 12:05p. Adult bald eagles were seen
at 11:12a, 11:17a, 1:35p, and 2:15p. We had another immature bald eagle
head north though the Western Valley. All three falcon species were
represented today.
Non-raptor Observations:
There were 9 Monarchs. A nice Black-throated Blue Warbler was seen early in
the day.
Predictions:
Similar weather with hawks on the wing.
