Visitors:
David and Carolyn from Illinois spent the day with us, along with former
regular Tad Finnel in for a visit from Texas. Cathy with the Roanoke Bird
Club and regulars Allen Austin, The Newcombs (less Andrew but, they drove
his new ride, probably trying to get it used to the journey up the
mountain). Phillip, Bill J, Baron & Tina, Randy. Ranger Amy stopped by
along with a number of curious parkway travelers. I'm sure I've missed some
visitors so please excuse the exclusion.
Weather:
Mostly sunny throughout the day with high cloud cover varying through the
day between 50 & 90%. Temperature ranged from 22c at the start of watch to
37c. Winds were light, never more than 3-4 mph. The far ridges in the west
valley were hazed in most of the day and several birds went uncounted as
they disappeared into the haze. Visibility improved late in the watch but
by that time there was little raptor activity.
Raptor Observations:
First bird was an osprey spotted out over the western side at 9:48 but the
majority of the birds came directly over the knob and very high. Most of
the broadwings overhead were visible only with binoculars. Several
acciptiers did come over low enough to be viewed without glasses.
Non-raptor Observations:
The vulture and raven activity that we normally see was slightly less than
typical. Ten to fifteen monarchs seen throughout the day.
