VA-birders,
I was a one-man band on the summit of Buffalo Mountain in Floyd County. What
makes this site so wonderful was definitely manifest today - really good looks
at Broad-winged Hawks which come by most places so high they can only be
discerned as "specks". On Buffalo today, virtually none of my birds were merely
specks. There were probably a lot of birds that I couldn't count because I was
focused on the main alley directly in line with the summit of the mountain.
Many of the passing birds did not kettle, but rather just glided over the
summit. I also had some Ospreys, Sharp-shinned, Coopers, and Red-shouldered
Hawks, oddly no falcons. I did have a bizarre experience involving a
Sharp-shinned Hawk that whizzed by within literally a foot of my face....a real
attention-getter.
Hoping for a productive next couple of days on the Buffalo!
