Jeremy McEntire and I spent several hours birding in Highland Co. today.
(Monday) Highlights included 4 singing male Golden-winged Warblers, a singing
male Brewster's Warbler, all on the O'Bryan's property on Wimer Rd., 4 Evening
Grosbeaks at the Beverage's home on Spruce St. in Monterey, Vesper Sparrows
and a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker on Bear Mountain, Red-headed Woodpeckers in the
Blue Grass Valley, Bobolinks in several locations, and a Bald Eagle at the
trout farm on Rt. 220. A complete list of the species that we located follows.
Canada Goose - 20, one pair with 3 downy young
Mallard - 1 pair
Turkey Vulture - 35
Bald Eagle - 1imm. 2nd year? flew away from the trout farm on Rt. 220 as we
pulled in.
Broad-winged Hawk - 1
Red-tailed Hawk - 2
American Kestrel - 1, possibly nesting in an abandoned house across the
street (West Mill Aly) from the library in Monterey. We saw it enter a hole in
the front of the bldg. and never saw it leave.
