Dear VSO Members,
The VSO Board of Directors met on Saturday, March 27, 2013 at VDGIF
headquarters in Richmond. In a nutshell, lots of exciting activities are
planned for this spring and summer! Here are just a few highlights:
1) As you've seen in previous emails, registration in open for the Annual
Meeting in Leesburg: http://virginiabirds.net/VSO-2013-Annual-Meeting.html
We invite VSO members and non-members alike to participate (but if you're a
non-member, maybe you'll be inspired to join!). In addition to field trips,
banquet program by Julie Zickefoose, etc. last year's Murray Award winner,
Courtney Turrin (grad student at William and Mary), and this year's
Conservation Grant winner, Andrew Dennhardt (grad student at West Virginia
University) will both be presenting during Saturday afternoon's scientific
paper session! We are very proud of their accomplishments and pleased that the
VSO could advance their progress.
You don't need to be an advanced birder to participate in the Annual Meeting.
In fact, it will be my pleasure to lead a field trip for beginning birders on
Saturday morning!
2) Two field trips are coming up in June: Piney Grove field trip on June 1
(VSO members only) and Highland County on June 7-9. Complete information about

3) The Summer Breeding Bird Foray is on for June 8-16 in Rockbridge County. The
VSO has never held one in this county, so we are excited to contribute to
knowledge about bird distributions there. More details are coming soon.
4) If you are a VSO member, Shirley Devan, our new membership secretary, is now
mailing out renewal letters. Thank you, as always, for supporting the VSO
through your membership dues.
