After a fairly quiet morning at Appomattox Riverside Park in Dinwiddie Co.,
only 3 migrants- BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH and VEERY,
Tina Trice and I headed over to Hog Island WMA in Surry Co. We immediately ran
into Larry Lynch and his friend Lauren who pointed out a juvenile BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPER at the far end of the first impoundment. The water level in that
impoundment is shrinking so there is a large grassy border in front of it. The
rest of the day was spent walking the inner trails finding nothing remarkable
but we were able to view the north field that is currently closed, from the
back side. On the way out, we checked the impoundment again and Tina spotted a
juvenile RED-NECKED PHALAROPE very close to the near shore, a pleasant
surprise. I pasted a link to photos below. I've listed shorebirds seen today
also. Good birding.
