I had to work in Hopewell this morning and had a nice surprise...Oscar
my osprey buddy was back. He was sitting on his normal pole devouring a
fish. He looked a bit thin but the way he was eating, won't stay that
way long. I did not see Olivia anywhere yet. She may have been in the
nest where I couldn't see her. I went back and looked and last year,
the first sighting of them was on March 5th, so a couple days earlier
this year. Lots of gull activity on the James River, several eagles,
about a hundred cormorants, and a couple great blue herons.
When I left there, I swung by Crewes Channel in Henrico on the way
home. The water level is down a bit, but still plenty there. There
were three areas of waterfowl. A group of about 20 mallards in the
middle, about 50 buffleheads to the left, and a group of maybe 50
pintails way in the back. Also had a kingfisher come in, several
cardinals, and an eastern kingbird while I was there. A pileated
woodpecker flew by as I started to leave.
Have a great weekend.
