It was a great shorebird day today for Tina Trice and I at Hog Island
WMA in Surry County. We found a MARBLED GODWIT and shortly after that
discovered a HUDSONIAN GODWIT. Both godwits were located at the north
end in the water that surrounds the large field opposite the observation
tower. Another good bird in the same area was an AMERICAN AVOCET. I
was able to get photographs of all 3 birds. Overall, we had 15 species
of shorebirds with most of the birds concentrated at the north end and
we had great looks at them all. It's a great place to get close to the
birds. The terns are pretty skittish there but the shorebirds aren't as
bad. A list of shorebirds and terns are below. Good birding.
