The hummingbird numbers at our house in [south] Reston continue to be quite
strong. Friday, after watching the birds for about an hour, I did not see
even one adult male of the species. Saturday, there were several adult
males around. I have eight feeders out now, and a snapshot would yield a
count of about 10 birds at any moment in time, leading me to conclude
(arguably) that I have about 30 hummers altogether around the property -
much lower than this time last year. The fighting and bickering
continues. I look for the first cold September morning to be the beginning
of the end of this year's fall Ruby-throated migration.
Happy birding. Craig
