Hi all:
Long time no text!
Scoped out 4 Short-billed Dowitchers (Lifer!) feeding in the low waters out
where the Great Egrets hang out.
Emphasis on low-waters because normally higher waters would preclude any
shorebird in that part of the marsh.
Some people are claiming that they are seeing pectoral sandpipers at Huntley.
I am doubtful.
The sandpipers I have been seeing have had a streaky-grey breast vs. the solid
grey breast of the
Pectoral sandpipers.
Just how rare are sightings of S.b. dowitchers and Pectoral sandpipers anyway?
Any comments?..as I need much more work on my shorebird ID's.
No other birds of note. Though for all you turtle fans, there was a pair of
mating Snapping turtles outside the loop at the
first little platform. Interestingly, when I was much younger, I hung around
Teddy --my affectionate name-- Roosevelt Island.
As I exited from the beatiful Japanese bridge, I noticed a Snapping turtle
laying eggs right along a muddy path for people
to gaulk at! She didn't seem to care one bit about the spectators. Not
surprising I guess, as I wouldn't like to lose a finger
picking one up--let alone an angry mom!
Good birding, herping, enting, herbing, lapydoptering et al!.
P.S. It would be great to have more of a diversity of experts in all, or at
least some of the fields.
