I had the honor of Sherm Suter's company while doing today's survey along
Huntley Meadow's Hike-Bike Trail. New arrivals tallied were Acadian Flycatcher
(1), Great-crested Flycatcher (3), Red-eyed Vireo (8), Wood Thrush (5), Scarlet
Tanager (1), and in the main meadow, Gray Catbird (1), Blue Grosbeak (2), a
male-female pair, and Indigo Bunting (2). Highlight migrant was a Blue-winged
Warbler singing along the spur road leading to the first meadow. Another couple
(Anna and Jeff) reported a Black-and-white Warbler, and Jeff spotted an
American Redstart while we chatted. We also heard or saw 2 Northern Parulas,
and Sherm observed a Veery along the Pond Trail.
Chipping Sparrows (7) are still moving through, some singing, and Field
Sparrows (2) and Brown Thrashers (2) continue in the main meadow. Three
Cooper's Hawks kept passerines on their toes and briefly interrupted some
songsters.
Last but not least, Sherm saw an American Bittern in the central wetlands from
the Platform at the end of the Hike-Bike Trail.
