I did my weekly survey while monitoring my nest boxes along the Hike-Bike
Trail and adjacent meadows and wetland. I heard my first of the season
Ovenbird singing along the Pond Trail. Palm And Yellow-rumped Warblers were
near the water control structure. A Brown Thrusher sang briefly from behind
nest box 52 in the meadow to the left of the platform at the end of the
Hike-Bike Trail. Hermit Thrushes are pushing through. I had four; only saw
one, but all four were singing. Rusty Blackbirds remain near the platform,
although in reduced numbers from previous weeks. Four swallow species were
present, including Purple Martin. Many of the Tree Swallows are staking out
nest boxes for the upcoming breeding season. A Carolina Chickadee was
putting the final touches on a moss nest inside the box near the maintenance
building. A ran into Rich Rieger, Dave Boltz, and Phil Silas along the
way. I'm sure they will be sending a report, but advance word is they found
a Black-and-white Warbler that I missed.
