I work at The Bird Feeder in Reston and twice this month, first two weeks ago
and again today, I have had customers tell me they have seen Indigo Buntings
going in and out of their bluebird boxes. I have questioned them thoroughly
about their observations of the birds to try to determine if they were in fact
Indigo Buntings and in both cases the descriptions do seem to indicate a
correct identification. (I realize the customer could be looking at a picture
of a bunting in a field guide and reciting to me what they see on the page.) I
have never heard of Indigo Buntings using nest boxes and have told my
customers, as nicely as possible, that this would be a rare thing indeed. And
yet, it seems more than a coincidence that two different customers who do not
know each other or live near each other would have the same experience. I
would appreciate comments from any of you who have heard of this, or seen it
for yourselves, and any possible explanations you have.
Thank you.
