A female Hooded Merganser has been sharing our front pond with two Canada
Geese for about two weeks (her husband left after a few days). This
morning, she was cruising and diving as usual, when a crow showed up on the
grass near the shore. She turned toward him and swam quickly, right at
him, never getting out, never rising up and flapping, but unnerving him.
The crow backed off, checking over his shoulder every few seconds, but not
flying off.
He was joined by another crow about thirty seconds later, and the Merganser
lost interest in the confrontation, and swam off. I'm not sure what she
expected to gain from this.
